Shortcodes
A Shortcode is a 3-8 digit number that is used for Premium SMS. It is not possible to make a phone call to a Shortcode. A Shortcode is a number used to send SMS messages to or receive SMS messages from.
In most cases a Shortcode is used for mobile billing, via Premium SMS, as it is possible to set a billing tariff to each Shortcode, thereby charging a user a premium rate above standard SMS rates to send SMS messages to a Shortcode or receive SMS messages from a Shortcode.
A Shortcode, if used for Premium SMS billing, will be connected to the billing platforms of all the mobile networks in a particular country. Once connected, a tariff will be applied to the Shortcode. Thereafter, should a user send or receive a SMS to or from that Shortcode, that user will be charged according to the tariff. The user will be billed on their mobile phone bill or the tariff will be deducted off a users' prepaid balance if they are a prepaid customer.
A Shortcode used for Premium SMS billing may either bill on a Mobile Originating (MO) or Mobile Terminating basis. MO billing is the term used to bill a user when they send a SMS message to a Shortcode and are billed as they send the SMS message. MT billing is the term used to bill an end user when they receive a SMS message from a Shortcode.
